At Outdoor Education Adventures (OEA), we believe the best way to learn about nature is to be immersed in it. As a nonprofit, our mission is to provide equitable, hands-on educational experiences in nature for students across all age groups. One of the most impactful ways we do this is through our school field trips, which bring classroom learning to life in the great outdoors. These experiences are available for students in preschool through high school and not only deepen students’ understanding of science, ecology, and conservation but also help them develop lasting connections with the natural world.
Transforming Learning Beyond the Classroom
Time and again, we’ve seen how students’ eyes light up when they get outside. Field trips with OEA are designed to spark curiosity, foster critical thinking, and nurture students’ innate connection to nature. Imagine a group of 5th graders wading into a cool stream, turning over rocks to find aquatic macroinvertebrates, and learning how these tiny creatures can reveal the health of a waterway. Experiences like these provide real-world context for classroom lessons, solidifying students’ knowledge in ways that textbooks can’t.
One of our most popular programs is Outdoor School for 5th and 6th graders, funded by the Oregon Lottery. These multi-day, non-residential trips immerse students in hands-on activities like ecology explorations, where they investigate local ecosystems, identify plant and animal species, and explore the interconnections within nature. With the guidance of our skilled naturalist-educators and trained volunteers, students develop critical thinking skills and a deeper appreciation for the environment. Plus, they get to experience the magic of getting a little muddy!
Another kid-favorite program is Salmon Watch, where middle and high school students learn about the life cycle of salmon and their vital role in local ecosystems. Field trips take place along salmon-bearing streams in Yamhill County, offering students the chance to observe salmon migration and spawning firsthand. As they engage in water quality testing, habitat assessments, and ecological observations, students gain a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship and their own connection to the health of our region’s waterways.
Why Schools Should Invest in Outdoor Learning
The benefits of outdoor education go far beyond just teaching science. Field trips provide students with opportunities to develop social-emotional skills like teamwork, resilience, and problem-solving. They also offer a much-needed break from screens and the confines of the classroom, allowing students to experience the physical and mental health benefits of being in nature.

Investing in outdoor field trips not only enriches academic learning but also nurtures well-rounded, environmentally conscious individuals who will be the stewards of our planet’s future. At OEA, we work closely with schools to provide affordable, accessible programs that align with educational standards, ensuring that every student has the opportunity to connect with the natural world.
Ready to Get Muddy?
Whether it’s catching macroinvertebrates, testing water quality, or watching wild salmon swim upstream, OEA’s field trips offer unparalleled learning experiences that stay with students long after they return to the classroom. If you’re a teacher or school administrator, we invite you to bring your students on an outdoor adventure with us. Together, we can inspire the next generation of environmental stewards.
